opportunities. Africa is not lacking in unskilled labor,
so most jobs that are open to foreigners usually require
a skill or a university degree. Here's a list of
resources to help you find gainful employment in Africa.
Job and Volunteer Opportunities In Africa
Paid and unpaid jobs in Africa you will find through
this page range in requirements from a minimum of a high
school education, to an advanced degree and prior

school building in Tanzania, wildlife management in
South Africa and working with street children, AIDS and
war orphans, in Freetown, Sierra Leone, or Nairobi,

fields, such as foreign service, environmental research,

Why Choose ,Eyes on nature Safaris, Ultimate Africa
Safaris?
An African safari is a considerable investment. Before
spending thousands of dollars we believe you should have
a very clear idea of why we are one of the most capable
and secure companies to work with.
The best of Africa - Travelers today are faced with a
dizzying array of travel choices. Each destination,
hotel, restaurant looks good. But we know, and you know,
that not all of them are. So how do you choose? At
Ultimate Africa, it is our job, not only to simplify
travel for our guests before their trip, but to ensure
that the arrangements we make are right the first time.
When you travel with Ultimate Africa you are assured
that your guides, accommodations, excursions and dining
will be the finest that we can arrange: in short, the
best of Africa.
Only Africa - We are safari consultants; travel agents
who specialize in Africa – only Africa. Our focus is on
high quality, high end, safaris for discerning clients.
We are not a big company nor do we want to be. We offer
a number of scheduled group trips (up to 8 guests per
scheduled group departure) or if you prefer (and most
travelers do) we would be happy to arrange a
personalized safari to fit your needs – this is our real
passion! If we feel that you are looking for something
we do not offer we will happily suggest a company more
suited to handle your request.
Extensive hands on knowledge - We know Africa
intimately. Each of our professional safari consultants
has lived and worked in Africa. Managing director Ian
Proctor has personally stayed at over 250 hotel / lodge
/ camp properties in east and southern Africa and
inspected hundreds more! Our consultants spend 6 to 8
weeks each and every year in Africa; not only to insure
that each property meets the high standards we demand
for our clients (it is our policy to regularly, and
personally, visit every property we recommend, and many
others besides), but also because we love Africa and its
wild areas.
Insider's tip - Did you know that many safari companies
employ consultants who have visited very few, if any,
safari camps, lodges or hotels…even companies based in
Africa! Would you trust your safari arrangements to a
company whose consultants have never been to the
properties they are suggesting?
Impartial and objective - Unlike many safari companies
that have a vested interest to recommend certain safaris
or accommodations with which they have a financial stake
or are shareholders, we have no vested interests (we do
not own or operate any camps, lodges, or hotels
ourselves and we are not contracted with specific tour
operators to exclusively market their tours or safari
properties). As such we are in a position to
independently analyze all tour operators, destinations,
and properties in a region, and offer our clients
impartial and objective advice.
Insiders tip - Many safari companies tell travelers that
any and every month is great for a safari. Often their
clients are disappointed when they arrive at their
destination and find the weather uncomfortable or that
the wildlife has dispersed because of the rains or other
natural phenomenon. We tell our clients the truth,
highlighting the positives and negatives of each season.
Exclusive and intimate - We do not sell anything and
everything. Most companies that do so have agents who
have very little hands on experience in visiting the
camps and lodges…even companies based in Africa. We have
personally visit hundreds of properties and only
recommend those that we consider truly special. Whenever
possible we recommend small and intimate safari
properties (typically no larger than 3 to 10 rooms
accommodating 6 to 20 guests) in superb wildlife areas.
We love properties where you feel at one with nature
without sacrificing comfort. In cities the options range
from boutique bed and breakfasts to historic hotels.
Our trips - Our trips are special. Our honeymoon
itineraries include bush dinners for two, champagne and
flowers on arrival, spa treatments, and upgrades to
honeymoon rooms. Our adventure trips include everything
from elephant back safaris to canoeing! Our Signature
Series trips can include private professional guides and
the exclusive use of your own aircraft with pilot. How
does dinner at a private residence in Cape Town sound?
How about spending the night at Nelson Mandela’s former
home? Or sipping champagne from an Arab dhow as the sun
sets over the “Mountains of the Moon”? Our extensive
hands on knowledge and network of friends and business
associates in Africa make each Ultimate Africa Safari a
unique experience!
Travel made simple - At Ultimate Africa we work with you
to design a trip suited to your needs (or suggest a
scheduled departure that might work for you). We then
reserve space at the safari properties and on flights.
If you are happy with the arrangements we have reserved
for you we then request a deposit to confirm. From air
tickets, to trip insurance, to transfers, activities,
and accommodations all of your arrangements are made
with one booking and your payment may be made by credit
card (MasterCard, Visa and American Express). Managing
director Ian Proctor personally approves every tour.
Insider's tip - Many companies request a deposit up
front and then check availability for your trip. If what
you are looking for is not available they then try to
sell you on something else – they have you hooked. We do
things differently.
All inclusive the right way - Many companies note that
they offer all inclusive trips. When you actually get to
the safari lodge you find there are extra charges for
everything from a bush dinner to a village visit. This
is not how we operate. Nearly all of our itineraries
include all activities, unlimited wildlife viewing
mileage, all meals, all snacks, alcoholic and non
alcoholic drinks, park fees, road / boat / air
transfers, accommodations, medical air rescue coverage,
most taxes and fees. All that is left is tipping, travel
insurance and international flights. If any part of a
trip is not included we make it clear to each client.
Your needs first - We are best known for our attentive
service, attention to detail, and honesty. There is
nothing more frustrating than emails and phone calls
going unreturned or working with a company whose
employees can’t remember your name or travel plans. Our
Seattle office is open between 10 AM and 6 PM weekdays
and we look forward to discussing the various travel
options with you. We want you to have all your questions
answered. We want you to have access to unbiased
information so when you make your decision you know it
is correct.
Whenever, wherever - A very important element of
traveling to a largely unknown destination is the peace
of mind to know that you will be properly taken care
before, during and after your trip. At Ultimate Africa
we take a conservative stance in deciding which tour
operators we will work with – they must have a lengthy
and consistent record of truly exceptional service, be
fully licensed and insured. While in Africa you will be
met at each location and transferred from airports, to
hotels to lodges and camps; your in country
representatives are on call 24 hours a day to answer any
questions you may have or to handle any problems that
might crop up (as are we). In this way it is possible to
travel with all the security of a packaged tour, but all
the flexibility and privacy of an individual traveler.
What others are saying - At Eyes on nature expeditions,
Ultimate Africa ,we handle arrangements for many types
of travelers; from jet-setting families to nature and
photography enthusiasts - all of whom expect nothing
less than perfection. If you are interested in learning
what past clients have had to say about their Ultimate
Africa Safari experiences please visit our testimonials
webpage.
Eyes on nature expeditions, Ultimate Africa has been
featured in National Geographic Adventurer Magazine,
Outside Magazine, United Airlines in-flight magazine
”Hemispheres”, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles
Times, Frommer's Travel, and other publications. In
October 2005 Ultimate Africa was featured on the “Wheel
of Fortune” on CBS.
Requests for trip specific references are welcome,
please inquire.
Your wildest dreams come true - We strive to act in all
dealings with integrity. We strive, in every aspect to
present a holistic experience that will produce guests
for life. Our passion has always been to share the most
remote wildlife reserves of the African continent and
all its magic with small, intimate groups of discerning
travelers in a way that leaves little imprint on the
environment. In describing what we do we like to use the
words immersion, authenticity, balance, understanding,
and enrichment.
The easiest way to plan a trip is to let us know when
you would like to travel, how many people will be
traveling, your budget, and your interests…we will then
make suggestions as to what would work best. Start
planning your unforgettable African safari today. Phone

Medical Electives - Kenya & Tanzania
Medical Elective Placements in Kenya and Tanzania
Please look carefully at the following places and
locations mentioned in this pack. It will give you a
good idea of the possibilities available to you, we can
then discuss your own trip and tailor-make it to suit
your skills and ambitions. We will work with you to
accommodate your needs as far as possible. The regions
where we currently operate are -
• Siaya, Western Kenya
• Nairobi - Kenya
• Naivasha, Kenya
• Kikuyu, Kenya
• Moshi - Tanzania
• Arusha - Tanzania
Siaya, Western Kenya
Siaya is a rural area close to Lake Victoria and the
Ugandan border where we have a very sociable Adventure
Alternative house that you would share with other
medical students as well as teachers on placement at one
of the local primary schools. The house has electricity,
solar panels and running water from a catchment tank,
with spacious bedrooms, a large living area and kitchen.
The toilet is a long drop and the cold shower is in an
outhouse but this is rural Kenya; an elective here will
provide a safe and clean back-to-basics experience. You
will look after your own shopping, cooking and
housekeeping, although we do supply you with a home
help. You will be very much a part of the local
community and have a genuine insight to the life of the
local Luo tribe.
Your local AA contacts here are Charles Otieno and
Maurice Odindo. We have worked with them for many years,
both through Adventure Alternative and Moving Mountains,
and they have been instrumental in the planning and
organisation of the nearby Moving Mountains orphanage.
There will be ample opportunity to get involved with the
Moving Mountains orphanage, where we have a girls’ and
boys’ dormitories, a Community Clinic, Crèche and
accommodation for our full time carers.
Siaya District Hospital, Kenya
Siaya District Hospital is a large teaching hospital
situated in Siaya Town serving an extremely large
population of rural people. The hospital itself is quite
run down and is lacking in government funding, but
government funding is on the increase as they have
recently opened a medical and nursing school in the area
so there are now a lot of Kenyan student doctors and
nurses completing their training at the hospital.
The Superintendent of the hospital, is very keen to
accept visiting medical students and is talking of
setting them projects to complete during their time in
Siaya. He is also very willing to work alongside the
doctors at The Dolphil and Bama clinics, so the students
can decide how long they want to spend in each area.
Services provided are -
Outpatient clinics - Casualty deptartment, voluntary
counselling and testing centre for HIV/AIDS, anti
retroviral therapy clinics, chest clinics (TB, COAD,
asthma), mother and child health clinics, antenatal
clinics, diabetes clinic, eye unit, dental clinic, ear,
nose and throat, immunizations, psychiatric
consultations
Inpatient wards - medical, surgical, orthopaedics,
paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, maternity
Facilities - X-ray, physiotherapy, occupational therapy,
laboratory, theatre, pharmacy
Dolphil Nursing and Maternity Home, Siaya, Kenya
Dolphil clinic is approx 15 minutes drive on the road
from Wagai towards Luanda. It is a private clinic that
receives financial assistance from a local church,
although it is now essentially self reliant except for
large expenditures such as new equipment. It has
recently built a Voluntary Counselling and Testing
Centre, and in October 2008 Moving Mountains have built
an operating theatre which will be ready for use by the
beginning of November. Many of the staff at the clinic
have already received the relevant training in
counselling etc to run this new service.
They will also offer free anti-retroviral drug therapy
as they are receiving the drugs free from their
sponsors. The clinic is operated by three doctors, one of
whom is on site 24 hours a day. There is also a team of
nurses and laboratory technicians who work in shifts.
The new surgery carried out at the clinic can now cope
with minor operations andr emergency cases. Larger
operations are transferred to the nearby Siaya District
Hospital and to Kisumu Hospitals. There are
opportunities for students to visit Siaya District
Hospital under the supervision of the doctors from the
clinic, one of whom rotates to work at Siaya District
and at the clinic.
The clinic has a male and a female ward, a paediatric
ward and a maternity ward with a delivery suite. There
is also a laboratory, mortuary and a theatre. The clinic
also provides chest clinics, mother and child health and
family planning clinics, antenatal clinics, diabetes
clinics, dental and ear, nose and throat clinics and
immunizations
The clinic offers a wide variety of services to a large
surrounding population and is run by an administration
board committee consisting of doctors, church officials
and members of the local community.
Bama Nursing and Maternity Home, Siaya, Kenya
This is another privately run clinic, very similar to
The Dolphil clinic. It is situated on the outskirts of
Siaya and offers much the same services as The Dolphil,
the only addition being that they often take care of
post-operative surgical patients from Siaya District
Hospital as the two facilities are physically very close
together. Also, because of this, the doctor in charge of
the clinic has very close links with a number of staff
at the District Hospital, so would easily be able to
arrange supervised visits to the district hospital for
the visiting students.
The clinic is operated by two doctors, one of whom
provides 24 hour emergency cover, as well as a number of
nurses, technicians and counsellors working in shifts.
There is a male and female medical ward, a maternity
ward with a delivery suite and a paediatric ward. There
is also a laboratory on site.
The clinic is also a voluntary counselling and testing
centre for HIV/Aids, has anti retroviral therapy
clinics, chest clinics (TB, COAD, asthma), mother and
child health clinics, family planning, antenatal
clinics, diabetes clinic, dental clinic and deals with
ear, nose and throat conditions and immunizations.
Nairobi, Kenya
Nairobi, and more specifically Kibera, is the location
of another Adventure Alternative house. Situated on the
outskirts of the Kibera slums, this is the biggest slum
in sub-Saharan Africa and houses almost one million
people. It is the location of the Hollywood film The
Constant Gardener and an incredible melting pot of
humanity. The house is similar to the one in Siaya in
that you will be sharing with both fellow Medical
students and teachers, it is very sociable, there is
running water, hot showers, flush toilets, a comfortable
living area with a TV and shared bedrooms. It is quite
safe but obviously you need to follow common sense rules
of keeping doors locked, not opening doors to strangers
and looking after your belongings.
Eva Muronji and Osman Mohammed are our representatives
in Nairobi. They are both extremely friendly and very
approachable and again have both worked for Adventure
Alternative for many years. One of them will escort you
daily to the clinic which is also on the outskirts of
the slum. Eva will help to keep the house in order,
assist you with shopping in the local markets and teach
Kenyan cooking. Osman is able to take you to visit our
charity projects around Nairobi and to meet the many
children that are sponsored.
The house in Nairobi is also where our Company Office in
Nairobi is situated so you will also meet all the other
staff as they come to work each day.
Ushirika Community Clinic, Kibera, Kenya
Ushirika is a busy Community Clinic on the out-skirts of
Kibera, it is about ten minutes bus ride from the AA
house. Our resident Adventure Alternative contacts there
are Caroline Ngatha and Ishmael Bosire who work full
time at the clinic and will help you with all the
details of daily routine. Ishmael speaks excellent
English and is very gentle and polite.
Routines include daily diagnosis and treatment, twice
weekly pre and post-natal baby clinics, weekly
vaccination clinics and ongoing treatment/monitoring of
patients with infectious diseases such as TB. The clinic
has a male and female ward and a maternity ward with a
delivery suite.
There are also laboratory facilities, patient
counselling, post-treatment care and home visits with
health workers four times a week. The clinic is also a
voluntary counselling and testing centre for HIV/Aids,
has anti retroviral therapy clinics, chest clinics (TB,
COAD, asthma), family planning and antenatal clinics.
St Mary's Mission Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya
St. Mary’s is a small hospital which provides
predominantly outpatient care for the poorer communities
of Nairobi.
The Superintendent of the hospital has designed a
rotation around the main specialities, including
medicine, surgery, maternity, paediatrics and a huge
range of outpatient’s clinics, which will really enable
the student to have an incredibly broad clinical
experience. The Hospital is very busy and has 250 beds,
with several full time doctors on shift at any time.
Outpatient Clinics Inc:
• Cervical Cancer Screening
• Antenatal
• Gynaecology

Coptic Hospital, Ngong Road, Nairobi, Kenya
This is a reasonably large hospital supported by the
Orthodox Church, just a 10 minute walk from our house,
again with a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient
facilities on offer 24hrs a day, 7 days a week. The
hospital boasts several highly qualified doctors and
specialised consultants.
Services offered are:
• A&E 24hrs
• Maternity
• Dental
• Pharmacy 24hrs
• Laboratory
• X-ray
• Ultra Sound
• Endoscopy
• Surgery
• Operating theatre
Kikiuyu Hospital, Nairobi
Kikuyu is a small urban town on the outskirts of Nairobi
approximately 45 minutes from the city itself.
You will stay in the Hospital’s own accommodation on
site, where you can either take meals in the hospital
canteen for minimal prices, or there are facilities for
you to cook for yourself. Our representative in Kikuyu
is Ann, a local lady who also works in the Hospital. She
has been involved with Adventure Alternative for several
years and will be on hand to assist you throughout your
placement. Ann has a very friendly and extremely bubbly
personality and she will ensure that you have an
enjoyable time both on placement and whilst you explore
everything that Kenya has to offer.
It is very easy for you to travel back into Nairobi
itself at the weekends to visit and spend time at our
Moving Mountains projects there if you wish, and also to
visit some of the tourist attractions that the City has
to offer.
The hospital itself is really busy providing health care
to a vast population of low income people. It is run by
the PCEA church (Presbyterian Church of East Africa),
and offers discounted care to its patients.
The hospital offers the following services
• Out patients
• Maternity
• Casualty
• Maternal and Child health clinic
• Family planning
• VCT, offering of ARV
• HIV/AIDS
• TB Clinic
• X-ray services
• Theatre
• PMTCT

VIPs is a Christian based clinic, offering outpatient
care to the poorer communities. Every Wednesday and
Saturday there is an outreach programme sent from the
clinic, including two doctors, a laboratory Technician,
and a pharmacist. The team travels to rural areas to
test and treat 250-300 children for malaria, HIV, treat
skin conditions and chest infections. Medical students
can join these outreach programmes, travelling to more
rural areas to experience the differences in clinical
problems between urban settings and rural living
conditions.
Naivasha, The Great Rift Valley, Kenya
Naivasha is situated in the stunning Great Rift Valley,
approximately two hours north of Nairobi. Some 20
million years ago, the earth's crust weakened and tore
itself apart creating a jagged rift, thousands of
kilometres long, across the African continent. The land
on either side erupted creating great volcanic
mountains, while the valley floor gradually sank into a
low flat plain. The valley northwest of Nairobi contains
a string of alkaline lakes and boiling springs includes
Lake Baringo, Lake Bogoria, Lake Nakuru, Lake
Elementaita, Lake Naivasha, and Lake Magadi in the
south. These lakes are unique because their water is
highly concentrated sodium carbonate. Each of the lakes
in the Rift Valley string have a slightly different
water composition ranging from freshwater to extremely
alkaline, highly saline to brackish. You will of course
be able to spend your free time exploring the Rift
Valley and other sites of interest in the area.
Your accommodation in Naivasha will be in a local hotel
just a short walk from the hospital and clinic where you
will be placed. Breakfast and Dinner can be taken at the
hotel, and lunch will be taken either at the hospital or
in town. One of the Adventure Alternative staff,
Caroline Ngatha will accompany you to Naivasha and

Moshi Town, Tanzania
In Tanzania we have full time staff in the town of Moshi,
which is at the base of Mt Kilimanjaro. Moshi is a
lovely quiet town with all the facilities you might
need, thanks to the tourists coming to the mountain.
Castro Kapela is our representative and he also runs our
safaris and climbs on Kili so he can easily help you
should you wish to organise a trip yourself.
Moshi is easy to reach, you can fly into Kilimanjaro
International Airport where you will be met or you can
take a daily coach from Nairobi. Accommodation will be
in comfortable safe town hotels within walking distance
of the hospital, and Castro will be on hand all the time
to look after you. English is spoken widely and Moshi
itself has a good nightlife and is regarded as a safe
town to be in.
Siima Hospital, Moshi, Tanzania
This is a small Hospital offering a wide variety of
outpatient clinics, and limited inpatient care.
The supervising doctor will ensure that you are fully
involved in all the outpatient clinics that take place,
including Mother and Child Health, Dental, Asthma, TB,
HIV/AIDS, Family Planning, Antenatal, Diabetes and
immunizations. The hospital also has a small casualty
department which deals with any emergency situations,
including injuries and any unexpected illnesses.
Kibosho Missionary Hospital, Moshi, Tanzania
Kibosho Missionary Hospital in Kilimanjaro region is a
general hospital which serves several districts
("counties") with a population of about 1.3 million
people, providing for both in-patients and out-patients.
This hospital has a number of departments, theatre,
surgical, paediatrics, surgery, reproductive and child
health, x-ray, public health, pharmacy, a dental clinic.
Others are Immunization programmes, T.B and leprosy
programme, psychiatry and physiotherapy.
There is a daily in flow of patients ranging from 100 to
150. The Hospital has just established a Community
support system that aims at providing support to various
communities in the region though community-based
Organizations (CBOS) and NGO’S in the provision of home
based care as part of a programme to support the
HIV/Aids control and prevention activities.
Arusha, Tanzania
Arusha is approximately 85kms from Moshi, and although
we don’t have any full time staff living in Arusha, our
staff from Moshi would accompany you there and remain
with you for the duration of your placement in Arusha.
Many of our students actually elect to complete a
placement which combines time spent in the Hospital in
Arusha with the hospitals in Moshi, as this gives a
really good insight into the differences in the
healthcare offered throughout the country, and also the
differences in presenting complaints from different
locations and living conditions.
Arusha is the safari capital of Northern Tanzania. It is
an unremarkable town in itself, but if you want to
combine your time on placement with weekend visits into
some of the major safari parks in Northern Tanzania,
then Arusha is the perfect position for accessing all of
them. It sits underneath the 15,000 ft extinct volcano
Mt Meru and the views of this on clear days are really
impressive.
St. Thomas' Hospital, Tanzania
The supervising doctor at St. Thomas’, through the
supervisor at Siima Hospital in Moshi is also a Director
at this hospital, so a combined placement can be
organised very easily.
The hospital is large, offering inpatient and outpatient
care to a very large and widespread community of urban
living Tanzanians. The hospital has Inpatient wards for
Surgical, Medical, Paediatric, Orthopaedic, O & G, and
Maternity patients.
In addition the hospital also offers a wide variety of
outpatient clinics, from Mother and Child Health through
to Dental services.
Adventures/Africamp
In a Nutshell
Join Eyes on nature expeditionsfor a month long
adventure of a lifetime in Kenya, where you will join a
very special and incredibly lively Kenyan team along
with our experienced leaders, travelling away from the
well-trodden tourist routes, and forging friendships
across cultural divides through real challenges.
Work on long-term, relevant grassroots projects with a
company that has genuine principles of investing in and
promoting the lives of hundreds of young people and
families. This includes building schools and clinics and
orphanages, as well as running 'summer camps' for street
kids. Then climb the second highest mountain in Africa,
go on an amazing overland safari and finish by relaxing
on the beach by the Indian Ocean, snorkelling and
enjoying the tropical sun.
To the left is a video from You Tube which
was made by a former Africamper, it sums up the work of
the charity Moving Mountains wonderfully and gives a
real insight to how Africampers get involved with the
charities projects and beneficiaries. (All copyright and
ownership remains with the owner.)
Print it off and post it in for a place on our trip in
2010.
Over the last few years we have built a community hall,
an orphanage, a clinic, a rescue centre a creche and we
ran camps for several hundred children in western and
eastern Kenya. We built shower blocks, toilets, put in
water facilities and renovated numerous schools.
Scroll down to see what projects we are doing in the
summer of 2009 and the dates to help you decide which
one you would like to join. Or click on any of the links
to the right to find out more.
Africamp is a real hands-on expedition that will let you
explore Kenya, see African life and meet many wonderful
people along the way through working with street
children, running proper community projects, climbing
Mount Kenya and going on a real overland safari all the
way to the Indian Ocean.
Africamp was voted as one of the Top 5 expedition
experiences for young people in the national press, and
for the past twelve years we have constantly improved
and refined this expedition so it is an unforgettable
month. We ask a lot of you, this is no hand-holding
exercise, but we promise you much in return.
“When I got home I wanted to change my name, I had
changed so much” remembers one Africamper.
Africamp will become an important part of your
curriculum vitae, a reflection of your character and
ability to be an effective member of a real expedition.
For individuals or groups aged 16-24, interested in an
all-round experience of a challenging and highly
enjoyable expedition in East Africa, Eyes on nature
expeditionshas a large complement of staff and vehicles
and equipment in-country to ensure safety,
professionalism and enjoyment. We welcome you to
Africamp.
The Alternative Expedition Company in Africa –in the
steps of Geldof and Bono.
Eyes on nature expeditionshas set up its own sister
company in Kenya called Eyes on nature expeditionsKenya,
which is run entirely by ex-street kids, who are now all
adults. All of them have been supported since childhood
by the charity we set up called Moving Mountains, which
has saved thousands of destitute kids in the country.
You will see how Aid in Africa works firsthand, how a
company is run which has such sensitivity towards local
cultures and the future of so many people. This is a
special chance to see it all with your own eyes, and
play a part that will make a difference. This is not
just an idle claim, it is the vision of Eyes on nature
expeditionsMD Gavin Bate who has spent much of his life
in the slums of Kenya setting up this unique system that
is truly changing lives.
Aid in Africa is big news now thanks to celebrities like
Bono and Bob Geldof and now the Commission for Africa.
The word is to use business to support charity properly
and we at AA have been doing this for years, and now you
can be a part of it. A great adventure, helping people
in Kenya but also helping the way we approach
sustainable tourism, challenge poverty and try to make a
difference for the future.
Teams
Around 25 people from ages 16-24 attend every year and
we run up to five month-long camps every summer to fit
in with school / uni holidays. The expedition is
extremely well organised and very well staffed and we
comply with all the relevant legislation and demonstrate
complete professionalism and responsibility.
This expedition is perfect for school groups, youth
groups, Scouts, Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award (we are an
Access Organisation) and individuals. We have been
running Africamp since 1991.
Project and Camp - community work in Africa
This expedition will show you a new world and give you
the chance to live and work with street children.
Perhaps for the first time you will come face to face
with poverty and you will see how hard people work just
to get by. You will also wonder how people are so happy
and friendly - it's a humbling and wonderful experience.
You will run rehabilitation camps, build schools and
clinics and orphanages and you will see first hand what
it means to really tackle aid in Africa, do something
positive and useful instead of just thinking about it.
The reality is quite different to what you might think.
The Mountain - Mt Kenya
The next part of this adventure is a five-day trek on
Mount Kenya, the second highest peak in Africa after
Kilimanjaro. Hiking through mountainous jungle provides
the perfect opportunity to experience wildlife in
close-up. Elephant, buffalo, giant forest hog, colobus
monkey and strange rock hyrax are all common here. This
guided non-technical climb to 16,350' is a fantastic
goal that offers both beauty and a real challenge.
Gorges and valleys, glacial lakes and unique high
altitude vegetation along with the spectacular landscape
make this a really memorable part of the expedition.
Safari
The third leg of the expedition is a safari, perhaps
what people associate most with holidays in Africa. You
will find yourself sitting on top of a special safari
truck or in a safari vehicle driving through
breathtaking scenery - far reaching savannah, fields of
baobab trees, herds of roaming buffalo, lush green
lakesides and red sunsets. We camp out in the bush,
preparing food outdoors and going on game drives.
Coast
Finally, the team will make their way to the Kenyan
coast, sometimes by overnight train through the
incredible Tsavo National Park and enjoy the white sands
and clear blue seas of the coast at either Malindi or
Mombasa. There are various activities to fill the hot
sunny days - snorkelling, diving and deep-sea fishing
are all available. Africamp expeditions also incorporate
traditional tribal evenings where you can join in with
the customs of local tribes. Try sampling the blood of a
freshly slaughtered goat at a local country hotel after
having summitted Mt Kenya ! You will dine in a variety
of places from shantytown dukas to the famous Carnivore
restaurant.
The Staff
A really enthusiastic and experience complement of both
UK and Kenyan staff, we employ fully and directly
through Eyes on nature expeditionsand our own company
based in Nairobi. This is the vision of Director Gavin
Bate, who has spent more than 15 years developing an
enviable infrastructure in Kenya and a track record
which is unblemished. You can be guaranteed
professional, polite and experienced guides on your trip
who have been to Kenya for a minimum of 6 years running.
The Kenyan team is very large and wide-ranging. We have
representatives and workers and supporters all over
Kenya. All of them have had some involvement with Moving
Mountains, either as a beneficiary when they were once
on the streets, or teachers, social workers and doctors.
Wherever you go in Kenya you will find someone who is
linked to the charity and to the company. They are all
incredibly enthusiastic, honest, decent and hardworking.
They understand western ways very well and speak perfect
English. Their whole life is dedicated now to promoting
the principles of ethical tourism in their own Kenyan
way.
The Expedition Options
Each of the Africamp Expeditions will concentrate on a
different area and during the year we will publish
exactly what each expedition will be doing and in which
area. The overall design of the trip remains the same,
but every year we identify the most interesting and
relevant projects.
In Siaya in Western Kenya we are building a Moving
Mountains village for destitute people and families;
this includes an orphanage, a clinic, a school, a crèche
and a vocational centre. It is a highly ambitious
project, developed now over 5 years. We are also
developing five schools in the region.
In Embu in Eastern Kenya we are slowly renovating a
rescue centre for parents and their children and
building up a strong medical link in the slums. We run
camps and work with all sorts of local organisations to
try and prevent the devastating effects of poverty and
abuse in the family. We are also supporting a clinic and
local school.
In Nyeri in Central Kenya we are running a programme of
rehabilitation camps for children, who are living in the
slums of this typically African market town on the
slopes of Mount Kenya. Projects will include renovation
of drop-in centres and clinics which exist to support a
community that has almost no Government welfare.
In Nairobi we work in the biggest slum in Africa called
Kibera where we have been building and renovating
hospitals and schools for many years. The experience is
very overwhelming but not in the way you expect. We are
very well known in schools like Muthurwa Primary where
we run a feeding programme for 650 children, and you
will help with that and run camps, renovate classrooms,
build hospitals and take the kids on weekend camps to
the Rift Valley.
And we are starting a whole new project in Mombasa
renovating a centre for about 80 children, where they
will be taught aswell as where they can live safely. We
already support it through Moving Mountains, but now
Africamp will turn it into a big success.
Accommodation
Generally most of your time will be spent in tents. On
the mountain we use high quality tents and at the camp
or on safari you will sleep in larger walk in safari
tents or sometimes in dormitories. On the coast it is
very warm and tropical and we pitch our tents close to
the sea. We have an excellent base in Nairobi and a very
comprehensive office on a site with hot showers, rooms,
computer and restaurant.
Food
Food is always plentiful and varied but not always the
same as at home. You will have the opportunity to feast
on Kenyan and Ethiopian delicacies, game meats, stews,
roasted corn, sugar canes and fresh fruit. Lots of
vegetables, potatoes, salads and good food is part of
the success for a good expedition. For the mountain you
get to choose your own food from the supermarkets and we
provide pots, stoves and fuel.
Equipment
On this expedition you will experience all sorts of
weather conditions from mild cloudy days in Nairobi to
hot and sunny ones at the coast. On the mountain
temperatures will drop to freezing and there is
occasionally some snowfall. Clothing needs to be
versatile and fulfill a number of functions. Layering is
the key to keeping warm. Eyes on nature expeditionswill
provide all tents, cooking equipment, transport, food
and bottled water.
Vaccinations and Malaria
You should discuss vaccination procedure with your GP
several months before departure. Recommended
vaccinations include: tetanus, polio and hepatitis. A
dental check is also recommended before departure. You
will also need to purchase malaria tablets prior to the
expedition.
Cost of the Africamp Expedition and what it includes and
excludes:
Price includes all pre-expedition organisation and
itineraries, all food for the whole month, all internal
travel and transport, all project costs, safari
equipment, accommodation, national park fees, activities
and UK and Kenyan staff.
Price excludes: international air fares to Nairobi
(estimate £400 - £600), your visa ($25), travel
insurance (estimate £70), vaccinations (estimate £30)
and malaria tablets (estimate £25) and personal spending
money for souvenirs etc (estimate £100).
Eyes on nature expeditionscompletely funds the overheads
of the Moving Mountains charity, ensuring that all
donations go to the children and the projects. The
Africamp Expedition in particular pays for the
rehabilitation camps for many street children and the
actual projects you will be carrying out.
The Weather in Kenya
The wet seasons in Kenya are generally March–May (‘long
rains’) and October–November (‘short rains’). Downpours
occur mostly in the late afternoons, with the earlier
part of the day generally being warm and sunny.
Temperatures in Nairobi range from 11–23˚C in July and
13–28˚C in February. Nairobi and the highlands can get
cold, especially in the evenings, during July and
August. Kisumu on Lake Victoria can be quite hot and
humid.

Kenya is scorching country with a dramatic, beautiful
landscape. An arid north where colorful nomadic
tribesmen survive in a hostile desert environment,
verdant rainforests and rolling savannah grasslands
which are home to great concentrations of large mammals
- Elephant, Buffalo, Giraffe, Lion, Leopard and Cheetah.
Snow-capped peaks and flamingo covered lakes combine
with the spectacular escarpment walls and volcanoes of
the Great Rift Valley and clear blue seas of the Indian
Ocean. It is obvious that Kenya has a variety of
habitats and scenery unrivalled on the African
continent.

Kenya is a water sports lover's paradise. Water sports
in Kenya's Coastal towns of Mombasa, Ukunda, Diani,
Watamu and Malindi include swimming, diving, boat
racing, fishing, kite surfing, wake boarding jet skis,
Banana boat rides and more
The warm currents off the shores of Kenya's Coastal
towns (Kenya's Coastal towns include Mombasa, Ukunda,
Diani, Watamu and Malindi) make the waters ideal for
swimming and diving. Ace Pioneer Expeditions Africa can
arrange for you to enjoy waters sports by the day and a
dazzling nightlife after sunset.
One of the most recent developments in water sports in
Kenya has been the introduction of kite surfing. Kenya
is ideal for kite surfing, owing to the warm waters,
abundant winds and the beauty of its coastal areas.
Other water sports in Mombasa, Diani, Watamu and Malindi
include windsurfing, kayaking, catamaran boating and big
game fishing. We can make arrangements for you to be
trained and hired equipment necessary before you go for
water sports in Kenya.
The lakes of the country also provide many opportunities
for indulging in water sports in Kenya. Boat racing on
the Lake Victoria, once a traditional sport of the
nearby villages, now attracts many visitors who are keen
to participate.
Those who are not quite so keen on extreme water sports,
yet would like to enjoy the beauty of the Kenyan coast,
would like a leisurely cruise on a dhow, a traditional
Kenyan boat. Take a trip to any of the smaller islets a
little away from the shore, and spend the day
picnicking, shelling, and fishing.
Divers will love the Kisite Marine Park in Mombassa,
rich in marine flora and fauna. Many large luxury dhows
offer daylong cruises on the sea. Explore the beautiful
coral reefs off the coast, as you let the enchanting
world underwater captivate you.

Planning your African Honeymoon
5 Steps to Planning your Perfect Honeymoon
, 23 June 2008
When planning a honeymoon in Africa your choices are so
vast and diverse that it can be extremely helpful to ask
yourselves five simple questions. These questions can
lead you to exotic destinations and unforgettable
memories.
When Are You Going on Your African Honeymoon?
In a sensible world couples would first ask each other,
"Where do we want to have our honeymoon and what time of
year is best for visiting?" instead of the traditional,
"What date should we set for our wedding?"
When people go on honeymoon is most often dictated by
the wedding date, leaving their choices for honeymoon
destinations slightly limited. Goosebumps are not a sexy
accessory for a beach honeymoon and torrential rain is
never pleasant on a walking safari.
Being such a large continent, Africa offers an array of
exotic honeymoon options at any time of year. Many
honeymoon destinations in Africa are fabulous and
romantic all year-round; others offer something for one
couple at one time of year, and something completely
different at another.

Karen Blixen Camp in the Masai Mara offers an authentic
’yesteryear’ experience for visitors wishing to gain
that little extra from their safari. Set on the bank of
the Mara River with the impressive Oloololo Escarpment

spectacular. Throughout the day elephants, giraffes,
zebras and impalas come for a drink while a large hippo
pod rest lazily in the river. The Camp gives a feeling

Responsible Tourism
Our operations in the safari industry were sparked by
our passion for Africa: we still love the continent, its
wildlife and its people. We recognize our responsibility
to ensure that our activities as a tour operator enhance
the environment of the places we go, protecting the
natural environment that shelters Africa's wildlife and
preserving the way of life of the people who call those
areas home. Our intention is to maximize the benefits
that tourism brings to each area, and we always aim to
act responsibly in all our dealings, especially when
they relate to environmental, social and economic
issues.
Responsible Tourism, responsible tourism, Responsible
Tourism Award, Responsible tourism and political
considerations
We pledge to continue to run our programmes wherever
possible in countries where political instability means
that mainstream tourism pulls out. Local suppliers,
businesses & communities rarely sanction political
ideals and should not be penalised for a government's
behaviour. E.g. Kenya
Policy Statement
At Lecden-Kenya we are committed to ensuring we adopt a
responsible attitude to the areas we travel through. We
believe our trips should benefit local people and
environments and we endeavour to make local culture and
communities an integral part of our trips. We are
dedicated to working towards sustainable operations by
including environmental, social, economic and ethical
considerations in all our business practices and
decision-making processes. Perhaps most importantly, we
recognise that we are guests of local communities we
travel through - and we strive to make these communities
into our partners, so they can benefit directly from our
business.
Our responsible tourism policy and guidelines aim to
maximise the positive benefits we bring to the
communities our groups travel through, whilst minimising
any negative impact on the local environment by:
Educating our staff, crew, local guides, agents,
suppliers and passengers in the importance of
sensitivity to these issues
Providing practical guidelines on how we can achieve
these objectives
Setting goals for us to all work towards together
We know we're not perfect and we're always looking for
ways to improve - but we are really proud that our
efforts have been recognised by the Association of
Independent Tour Operators, who have awarded us their 5
Star Sustainable Tourism rating.

RESPONSIBLE TOURISM POLICY
Our Ethos and Our Mission:
Lecden-Kenya was founded with the purpose of promoting
responsible and ethical tourism to East Africa so that
both visitors and local communities benefit. We believe
that sustainable and sensitively targeted tourism is
invaluable in the development of local communities and
in the preservation of natural environments and wildlife
in sub-Saharan Africa. We aim to encourage all kinds of
people to visit East Africa, as we believe this
wonderful part of Africa has a lot to offer the
discerning visitor as well as local communities.
Unlike some tour operators, we don’t believe in paying
exorbitant prices to be listed as “Responsible Travel”
practitioners or enroll for grand awards to identify
ourselves as such. We believe that the cost of joining
such organizations is best invested in development
projects of the host countries we work with. We believe
that our actions are proof enough of our commitment, and
we know that those who are truly committed to assisting
the local communities and conservation projects in
developing countries will do so to directly benefit
these, without the pomp or label of being a “Responsible
Tour Operator”.
Our mission is centred around organising responsible
tours in East Africa to benefit the local community and
wildlife conservation, whilst enabling our clients get
personal attention and top rate wildlife and cultural
experience resulting in a truly memorable holiday, means
that our programs are unlike any other on the market.

Home Based Care (HBC) is the provision of basic nursing
care needs by formal or informal caregivers to people in
their own homes. This service is available to people who
have mental, physical, emotional and social needs. Among
people who qualify for this care are those who have had
strokes, who are living with HIV/Aids, who are
physically or mentally challenged, frail older persons,
or those who are terminally ill. The care given is meant
to restore and maintain the individual's maximum level
of comfort, function and health, including care towards
a dignified death.
There are five major tragedies that emanate from
HIV/AIDS: the psycho-social impact on children who sit
by helplessly watching as their parent suffers and dies,
the negative psychological impact on the sufferer, the
social stigmatization of both patient and family, the
physical pain suffered in the last stages of AIDS and
the possibility that the HIV positive person has
infected another person. When these impacts are combined
with dire poverty and increasing numbers of infected
people, the result on all spheres of community life are
devastating. An Organization You Can Trust, THE CHILDREN

Conservation and Community Projects:
• Do not purchase products that may endanger the
survival of an animal by encouraging the destruction of
a species for souvenirs such as ivory, skins or other
wildlife products.
• Visit and support local conservation and community
projects. This provides valuable funding for projects
and enables the local community to improve their
standard of living through developing infrastructure and
services. Clients often learn invaluable skills and gain
important lessons by speaking to local communities for
instance learn archery from expert archers the Hadzabe
bushmen, walk with Maasai warriors, learn about
zero-grazing farming methods from the enterprising
wachagga tribe.
• Do not give money to beggars and do not hand out
sweets to children on the roadside. (Note: dental
hygienists are not widely available to people living
rurally). Instead make a resolution that you will
contribute to a local school, village or health project
before you leave Africa and this will be money well
spent (this is obviously at your discretion and only if
you wish to do so).

GIVING SOMETHING BACK ...
Lecden-Kenya is committed to responsible travel and true
sustainability. It was a commitment formed when the
company was established, and today, in the face of a
multitude of threats to the environment, our commitment
is stronger than ever.
We aim to ensure that our destinations retain their
natural character and cultural diversity for future
generations. This vision can only be achieved with the
support of all of our travellers and business partners.
Our ‘Responsible Travel Guidebook’ has been written in
order to fulfill our vision. The booklet sets out our
environmental objectives and practices and how you can
play a part in reducing the impact on environments and
cultures around the world. Every participant on a Eyes

of this guidebook.

Every participant on a Eyes
on nature Expeditions adventure receives their own copy
of this guidebook.

There is no greater joy than bringing hope to children,
and no greater responsibility than protecting the
innocent. where there is charity and wisdom, there is
neither fear nor ignorance. YOU can make a real
difference in the lives of homeless and street kids by
supporting LECDEN-KENYA, Your support means that we can
reach into the streets, alleys and beaches and give them
hope. Not the hope of one day or one month, but for a
lifetime!
Please help us make that commitment. More than 94% of
your donation goes directly to assisting homeless and
street kids.
Over a million innocent children are orphaned or
abandoned in Kenya due to the devastating HIV/AIDS
crisis. These orphans struggle for necessities: food,
clothing, education and medicine.
Let us Feed, Clothe & Educate the Poor,Imagine living in
a squatter/slum/ village in a makeshift home constructed
out of scrap metal and cardboard, with mud floors, and
no electricity or water.
Imagine raising your kids in this place with hardly any
food to eat. This is the plight of
squatters/slum/village in the in Kiambiu slum,Kibera
slum and Kogelo village. No land, makeshift homes,
little to eat, no work & no education for their
children. Help make their lives a little brighter.
Through your generous donations and gifts our children
will get provision of education, good food, medical
care.

Worlds leading Greenland Expedition Specialists and
Logistic Consultants
Welcome to Tangent Expeditions - the World's leading
Greenland expedition specialists for mountaineering,
climbing and ski touring expeditions to Arctic
Greenland! The only truly 'comprehensive' website guide
to Greenland mountaineering, ski-touring, snowboarding,
ski kiting and ice cap crossing expeditions.
20 years of extensive and focused Greenland expedition
research, planning, guiding and expertise.
With unrivalled experience and meticulous attention to
detail we offer both guided Greenland expeditions and
specialist expedition logistics packages for independent
travellers. Our Greenland expedition programme covers
all the main mountaineering ranges and icecap journeys
and crossings. We are the only Greenland expedition
specialist offering tours and arctic expeditions to the
Watkins Mountains of east Greenland, including ascents
of all the highest mountains in the Arctic. We offer
regular annual expeditions to Gunnbjornsfjeld (3693m),
Dome and Cone, the three highest peaks in the Arctic, as
well as private logistics for independent groups.
We are the first company to offer guided snowboard
expeditions to the Liverpool Land and Scoresbysund
region of northeast Greenland as well as our excellent
price busting ski touring and cross country ski
expeditions. We were the first company to our offer
guided icecap crossings and we have recently added heli
skiing and first ski and snowboard descents of virgin
summits to our programme. In addition to Greenland we
run arctic expeditions to Svalbard, Spitsbergen, Baffin
Island, Ellesmere Island and Jan Mayen island.
For over 20 years our main focus has been on opening up
new mountain ranges and icecap crossings in east and
northeast Greenland. It would be no exaggeration to say
that Tangent alone has opened up virtually all the new
climbing venues in east Greenland during that period.
Our experience is unrivalled.
Using our own privately chartered Twin Otter ski plane
it has been possible to reach numerous new peaks,
mountain ranges and glaciers that no previous expedition
has ever climbed in before. Amongst our selves and our
clients we have made close to a thousand first ascents
of previously unclimbed peaks, summits and mountains
throughout east and northeast Greenland.
Tangent operates an extensive logistics platform in east
Greenland, including various aircraft, helicopter, snow
mobile and dog sled options, to facilitate access to
every conceivable region for the most discerning
traveller. This experience has led Tangent to become the
primary choice for TV companies wishing to film in and
amongst the mountains and glaciers of Greenland. We have
worked with many military expeditions and were
consultants and expedition organisers for the US Navy
LA-9 crash investigation and recovery expedition on the
Kronborg Glacier in 2004. In 2009/10 we will co-ordinate
the logistics for the follow up expedition to Antarctica
to recover the human remains of the servicemen killed in
the Thurston Island George 1 disaster.
We are Adventure Specialists in Outdoor Adventure Travel
and Adventure EcoTours. We lead Adventure Maya-Archaeo
Expeditions to Pre Classic and Classic Maya Ruins
exploring the relationship of ancient Maya Dynasties,
Architecture and Art. Examining its impact upon the
modern Maya Culture and everyday life. Explore with us
the religious Deity/King culture of the Early Maya. View
how religious ceremonies, past and present, are woven
into ancient and modern Maya Art, Architecture,
Politics, Social Interaction and Folk Lore. Observe and
talk with Archaeologists and Architects who are
Excavating and Restoring the Great Cities of the ancient
Maya Civilization. Visit with and Live among the modern
Maya People and examine their modern ways and reflect

Africa Adventure Tours and Small Group Trekking
Africa is considered by anthropologists as the
birthplace of humanity, where mankind evolved and
progressed. Throughout the Great Rift Valley fossil
traces show how humanity adapted to the diversity of
opportunities in the widespread savannahs. This
diversity is possibly why Africa retains such a primal
attraction to travelers and especially to those looking
for adventure.
Eyes on nature Expeditions offers small group adventure
holidays to Botswana, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Libya,
Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, South Africa, Tanzania,
Uganda & Rwanda. You can tour, trek, climb, canoe or
cruise your way through this exciting continent on your
perfect adventure holiday.

The Upper Hill Nairobi Country Lodge
At only US$ 60 a night inclusive of a hot breakfast and
28% taxes, what can you expect in Nairobi? Sadly, not
much. For this reason we (bushdrums.com) decided to add
this hotel to our portfolio. Although it doesn´t exactly
comply with our code of ethics, it is not conducted
against our ethics either, and since we all need a place
to stay on touch-down in Nairobi, we decided to share
this information on the new hotel with you.
Travelling internationally, such a budget will buy you
good clean accommodation without any compromise on
security, noise, connectivity and general comfort.
Thankfully for the consumer, a new Nairobi Hotel has now
decided to change this. The Country Lodge opened
November 1, for weeks ahead of schedule. The Country
Lodge concept is new to Nairobi, but well established in
the USA, Europe and South Africa - it is a hotel without
restaurants, targeting the business traveller who wants
a clean, quiet and safe place to sleep, a good Wi-Fi
connection and a hot breakfast. He / She does not want
to spend too much and is prepared to compromise on
amenities, but will never concede quality, comfort,
connectivity and security. He/She will spend much of the
day in an office in Nairobi and then dine out in one of
Nairobi´s great Restaurants that you will find in our
Restaurant Guide.
Kenya offers excellent dining opportunities. The blend
of cultures that have existed in Kenya and still do has
led to a rich diversity of food. The abundance of
seafood, fresh vegetables, fruit and meat provides
excellence in raw materials a number of which are
exported to Europe.
Nairobi has a large diversity of restaurants and well
used by locals and tourists and some having achieved
international fame. Most types of cuisine can be found
in Nairobi.
Kenyans are great meat eaters and Nyama Choma which is
roasted meat is consumed by millions every day in the
Choma Joints and cooked over a fire of charcoals. Ugali

of HIV
In the last century, a great deal has changed for many
women, however, for those in developing countries change
has not been so swift - an estimated 70% of people
living in poverty are female and unbelievably every
minute a woman dies in childbirth.
But we can change this. Our first step is something that
sounds remarkable, but according to health experts is
possible: ending mother to child transmission of HIV.
Take action and encourage to end mother to child
transmission of HIV as a priority intervention to stop
the spread of the disease.
This year is going to offer us the best possible chance
to make a difference and we need as many people as
possible to help.
Please continue your successful focus on women's health
by supporting efforts to end mother to child
transmission of HIV. But we can change this. Our first
step is something that sounds remarkable, but according
to health experts is possible: ending mother to child
transmission of HIV.

Giving birth alone
‘’When I went into labor at age 16, I had to wait at
home 2 days before I was taken to the hospital. My baby
did not survive the journey, and I developed
complications that I would live with for many years
afterwards. My case is not unique in Kenya where I live,
and I was determined that no other women should have to
suffer alone the way that I had. I became a midwife and
since then I’ve dedicated my life to other helping
mothers and children.’’
But we can change this for future mothers. As part of a
comprehensive initiative to improve the health of
mothers and their children.
My work is difficult – I often travel alone and
sometimes fear for my safety, but I am determined to
help.
But we can change this. Our first step is something that
sounds remarkable, but according to health experts is
possible: ending mother to child transmission of HIV.

possible to help. Please join me in an efforts to help

I’m pregnant
In a few weeks I will give birth knowing that for all
the pain, I have much less to worry about than many
other soon-to-be mothers.
I can't imagine what it must feel like to find out you
are pregnant and have HIV (few women know they are
infected beforehand) and then to be hit with the
devastating news that there is a good chance you will
pass this on to your baby.
But this is the shocking reality for many mothers. 90%
of the 430,000 children newly infected with HIV each
year acquire the disease through birth, and half of them
will die before their second birthday.
Yet mother to child transmission can largely be
prevented. In the last century, a great deal has changed
for many women. But for those in developing countries
change has not been so swift - an estimated 70% of
people living in poverty are female and unbelievably
every minute a woman dies in childbirth.
