Jackson Abujeka, a 19 year old member of the Kiambiu slum, had his prayers answered with the removal of a deadly tumor in his lower jaw. It had been growing steadily since he was 5 years old. Its impact on his life has been profound, preventing him from going to school since he was eight because the other children became increasingly afraid of him. Now, thanks to LECDEN-KENYA and volunteers and well-wishers, he can live a long and happy life and has returned to school!

INCOME GENERATING ACTIVITIES (Poverty Eradication Initiative)
As part of the support for the People Living With AIDS (PLWA) and specifically widows, and their care providers,
LECDEN-KENYA encourages and supports income-generating activities. These help establish small businesses with the community. Most of the participants have lost their breadwinners or their own jobs due to HIV/AIDS infection.

Through financial support from St. Bridgit Church, Wisconsin, USA, we have been able to train and implement small businesses for 21 of our members. These are all widows infected or affected by the HIV/AIDS/poverty.

So far some have been able to start repaying their small loans which will enable us recruit more members into the programme.

YOUTH CENTER

LECDEN-KENYA has established a drop-in center where the community youth can walk-in and use the services of the center. They come to interact, discuss personal issues, access counseling services and participate in community services. The aim of the Youth Center is to build the capacity for self-sufficiency among the youth. To this end, the children receive training in income-generating projects. And because they are just children despite their circumstances, the Center also organizes recreational/extra-curriculum activities like football matches, athletics, boxing, etc for the youth.

CONCLUSION

We wish to thank all of our friends and well-wishers for supporting us materially and technically and we wish to encourage them to continue supporting us in this worthy course. We have been able to go a step further. Courtesy of the efforts of Friends and well wishers in the USA and Eyes on Nature Expeditions, a tour firm based in Nairobi, Kenya, we have been able to arrest opportunistic infections, support adherence to medication, monitor our clients and thereby improve their health considerably. We wish to thank our local partners also for their support. The Kenya Aids NGOs Consortium (KANCO) and Feed the Children (FTC) Dagoretti, Nairobi have all been instrumental in giving us more support.

Networking & Collaboration

LECDEN-KENYA boasts of its reputation of having a positive regard and recognition of its stakeholders both in and outside Kenya. Indeed, LECDEN is perhaps one of the very few organizations in Kenya that applies the principle of networking, which, for instance enables many joint activities to be conducted with other organizations. A perfect picture is the December 2006 women rights workshop held in Nairobi, at which LECDEN-KENYA mobilized 30 NGOs and CBOs to participate in deliberations on what community organizations can do to strengthen the fight against violations of rights of women living with HIV & AIDS. We cherish these partnerships as they demonstrate the old saying that together we stand

We are confident that we are gradually and consistently reducing the ravages of HIV/AIDS. We trust, pray and hope that with the wider efforts of the International community, HIV & AIDS will soon be a thing of the past, condemned to the dustbin of history and the archives of medical libraries.

We however contend that when this scenario shall finally come, one of the most profound effects of HIV/AIDS will be the glaring faces of orphans and other children whose lives have been shattered by the epidemic. To these outcomes of the epidemic, society shall still be called upon to offer comprehensive guidance, care and support.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

Q: How long has LECDEN-KENYA been helping victims of HIV?AIDS?
A: LECDEN-KENYA began in 2005 as the Kiambiu Self-Help Community Programme in the slums of Kiambiu, Nairobi, Kenya. The program was started by community members and has now grown to include 3 feeding centers and the care of over 500 children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Because the services of LECDEN-KENYA have reached beyond the boundaries of the Kiambiu, and Kibera slums and outside Nairobi, it was decided that the name should be changed to reflect its larger scope of services within Kenya, hence the new name, LECDEN-KENYA.

Q: Is LECDEN-KENYA a government run program?
A: No. LECDEN-KENYA is a registered, NGO (Non-government organization) meaning that is it a charity, funded by donations, grants and fundraisers. Financial reports are available to anyone wishing to review them.
